The Sun and the Asp
History
Uphuron; It is he who gives the people the land to live off, and who takes care of their souls after they pass on. It was he who created the world and all that was in it. He made the world of sand so that man could be tested in his existence and grow strong for it. Uphuron's symbol is the asp, and it has become a common theme of decoration in everyday life on the isle. Uphuron is sometimes called the Sun God, and it is in this aspect that he is most revered. Since sunlight is just as important for plant life as water, frequent sacrifices are made, most often those type considered "giving back" sacrifices: crops and livestock that has grown strong due to life outdoors. It is from this reverence of Uphuron, as the Sun, that the tradition of the shaved head comes; by exposing more of oneself to the Patron of Sands, one shows one's devotion.
[Scholars find it interesting to note that although Uphuron is a representation of Mother Earth, he has incorperated aspects of Father of the Heavens. Some scholars believe Illuminatus, the God of Light, is the binding element here.]
