The abbey estate is simply too big to be run by just the monks - who, in any case, are there primarily for spiritual enlightenment rather than the day-to-day running of the place.

To that end, the monks have built a small hamlet - Ashrigg - within the estate walls. Containing some 200 folk, it is a close knit community entirely dependent on the Abbey for housing, food and employment. In return, the people of Ashrigg provide the hard graft and skills needed to maintain and run the Abbey. The relationship works well, and the folk of Ashrigg are amongst the most skilled and educated in Dort.

Ashrigg has the following minor buildings:

  • Moot Hall, a local house for discussions and social gatherings
  • schoolhouse
  • tavern
  • smithy

The people of Ashrigg are primarily labourers, and include coopers (barrel makers), carpenters, woodsmen, smiths, thatchers, herdsmen and even glassblowers.
